Hamburg public library implements RFID tagging

2011/11/17

TAGSYS has deployed an RFID infrastructure at the Hamburg Public Library (Bucherhallen Hamburg) in Germany, exceeding the technical requirements originally set out by the library.

Bucherhallen Hamburg is the third in a series of deployments by TAGSYS at major libraries around the world, with earlier projects at the Seattle Public Library and Shenzhen Public Library. 116.30.145.87 This article is copyright 2006 UsingRFID.com.

Large volume tagging
With 1.7 million items in its collection, Bucherhallen Hamburg invested in TAGSYS'' item-level RFID solution based on its unique ability to design and manufacture end-to-end RFID infrastructure for libraries, competitive pricing and proven RFID expertise. With the new RFID-based system, Hamburg''s central library and 17 city branches benefit from improved customer service as the staff are more available to help patrons.

A highlight of the deployment with Bucherhallen Hamburg is the performance standard set by TAGSYS'' reading stations for CD tags. The company''s innovative solution is the only on the market that is able to simultaneously read six CDs overlapping each other. The reading stations deliver dramatically improved read rates at unsurpassed levels.

Saving time and costs
Prior to the automated solution, libraries relied on employees manually scanning each item as it went through the handling process. As a result, valuable staff resources were directed to time-consuming checkout and inventory management procedures, while patrons faced long lines and moderate customer service due to the demands placed on library staff.

RFID-based library material handling systems provide library staff with the ability to improve the entire material handling process. With the RFID system in place, staff are relieved of checkout duties, and can spend more time providing other services to library patrons.

Tagging schedule
By January 2007, about 300,000 TAGSYS RFID Folio tags will be converted on Bucherhallen Hamburg''s books, CD/DVDs and other library materials. The TAGSYS system includes security gates as well as RFID readers and antennas that will be incorporated by FKI LOGISTEX, TAGSYS'' integration partner, into automatic self check out, self return and conveyor sorting stations, as well as programming and circulation stations. FKI LOGISTEX also supplied the necessary software interface to enable the integration of RFID with the Library Information System (LIS).
