Jewels tagged for inventory security

2011/11/23

The item-level RFID infrastructure provider TAGSYS has announced that Geneva-based watch making and jewellery company De Grisogono has adopted its RFID track-and-trace solution for inventory management across its stores worldwide.

The luxury retailer will use the TAGSYS'' Reliable, Accurate and Secure ("RAS") HF RFID readers and tags in its efforts to reduce theft and minimise loss of both jewels and watches. 116.30.142.201 This article is copyright 2006 UsingRFID.com.

The project begins immediately in the company''s Paris and Geneva branches, with future deployments being planned for its European, Asia-Pacific and North American locations. Future roll-outs are expected to take place at the rate of one store every two months.

Better than bar codes
De Grisogono initially considered the use of traditional bar codes as a means to track individual items, such as gems, from its distribution centre through the shipment process to its retail outlets. However, the threat of theft or loss of assets required the deployment of a more reliable tracking technology.

By using the TAGSYS jewellery application, developed in conjunction with system integrator SOLID, the company has a real-time RFID-based detection system that monitors stock location at all points in the supply chain.

According to M. Laurent Debief, CFO for De Grisogono, "As a retailer of luxury watches and jewellery, we are extremely concerned by the threat of theft or loss of our assets. By deploying this RFID jewellery application across our network of shops, we are better able to manage our inventory down to the item level through complete visibility of products from headquarters to shop floor."

Tagging jewel trays
The application consists of TAGSYS ARIO-70-SM high-frequency RFID tags which are fixed to individual jewels. These items are then tracked and registered each time they are moved to a safe or consignment. By placing trays with tagged jewels on a customised RFID reading station (based on the TAGSYS Medio L100 reader and Aero LC antenna), tagged items are immediately read and processed.

This replaces the error-prone process manual checking and data entry. The software provided by SOLID sends the inventory information from the scanned tags to a central database, which is housed at De Grisogono''s headquarters.
