The UK''s official communications watchdog body OFCOM has decided to exempt the use of radio frequency identification equipment in the 865-868 MHz band from Wireless Telegraphy licensing.
According to OFCOM''s summary announcement, the organisation will soon make spectrum available in the range 865-868 MHz for use by RFID equipment, in line with the European Conference of Communications and Postal Administrations (CEPT) recommendation on Short Range Devices. 116.30.142.201 This article is copyright 2005 UsingRFID.com.
OFCOM says that the decision has been taken due to globalisation of the market and increased interest from businesses in the potential of RFID technology.
The exemption is, however, subject to the terms, provisions and limitations set out in official regulations. One of these is that the RFID equipment must not cause or contribute to any undue interference to any wireless telegraphy.
Finalising soon
The necessary regulations are currently undergoing the final stages of the statutory process to bring them into force, and the process is expected to be completed within the next month.
Ofcom received 6 non-confidential responses to the proposals, from: the British Retail Consortium, GS1 UK, iPico Identification, Jersey Authorities, John Falck, and Scanology.
