Report details RFID's past, present & future

2011/11/30

Incucomm has recently published its analysis of the RFID market in the form of a report which includes an international survey of firms that are active in RFID, a quantitative assessment of the market for tags and labels, readers, services, and a thorough mapping of the RFID value web as it stands today.

The report consists of two main sections. The first provides the business case and context for RFID deployment in the supply chain and other verticals, while the second examines the potential effects of RFID in related industries, such as the semiconductor industry. 116.30.147.133 This article is copyright 2004 UsingRFID.com.

The six appendices provide a listing of more than 250 firms in the RFID space, and more than 100 firms poised to serve the rapidly evolving consumer packaged goods market. The report also includes more than 200 charts and graphs covering the RFID market.

Main topics
Some of the topics covered include:

Why RFID is arguably the most discussed technology topic of 2004.

Important questions that are not being addressed by the industry as a whole, and questions that Incucomm believes are currently being answered too narrowly.

Where is the RFID market going, and what is its current state?

Where are tags and readers going next?

A 2008 RFID market forecast synopsis and general study findings.

Chapters 4 & 5 provide background information on tag prices, which will ultimately determine how deeply RFID can penetrate the supply chain management market.

Two sections
The report''s two main sections and appendices can be purchased in various configurations to suit the reader''s needs:

Section 1: A significant amount of time has been devoted to the discussion of RFID in companies, the press, and the investment community. Most have been asking questions such as: How much will it cost? Where will the ROI come from? Who will benefit from its use? Where are the opportunities to make money? To answer these questions and others, the RFID universe must first be put into its proper context. The report''s first three chapters attempt to structure, define, and make clearer the CPG RFID ecosystem, terminology, and business case.

Section 2: As with many markets, CPG RFID has many layers in its value chain, with each being fragmented. The report''s second three chapters try to bridge these layers to determine if they can support the necessary business cases to make RFID a widespread reality. While other elements are modelled, much attention is paid to the silicon processing aspect of the value chain, and to the capability and strategic implications of reaching critical price points that would support increased market adoption.
