A complete resource management system for libraries has been launched by RFID technology company, Checkpoint Systems Inc., to automate labour-intensive functions such as collecting fees and fines for overdue books, scheduling computer time for patrons, and managing patron printing and copying costs.
The new CheckPASS system is being made available to libraries either as a stand-alone system or as part of Checkpoint''s Intelligent Library System.
Resources strained
According to Checkpoint, libraries face growing demands for computer, printing, and copying services - the management of which requires time and effort from library staff. Checkpoint''s offering aims to help libraries manage their patrons'' requests without any extra burden on staff members. The system allows patrons to reserve computer time, request and pay for printing and copying jobs, and pay any library fees due without the need for staff assistance. 116.30.147.133 This article is copyright 2004 UsingRFID.com.
Patrons use one card - their library card - to check-out library materials, reserve computer time, and request or pay for photocopies and computer print-outs. They can use a self-service unit to add cash to their account balances and, when they learn they have a fee or fine to pay, they can do so with the touch of a button at a Patron Self Checkout Station, where the correct amount is debited from their library account.
"CheckPASS is the latest initiative in our quest to ensure innovative, cost-effective and time-saving solutions to the issues facing today''s libraries," commented Doug Karp, general manager of the ID products division at Checkpoint Systems.
The technology
CheckPASS enables libraries to create, monitor and manage patron accounts from an existing PC, with no need for additional hardware or servers, and to optionally integrate those accounts seamlessly with Checkpoint''s RFID-based Intelligent Library System (ILS). It works with traditional barcode systems as well as magnetic stripe or RFID library cards.
CheckPASS operates on Citrix, Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Novell Networks, and works with unlimited queues and printers, enabling cost calculation and payment at either the workstation or the print-release station.
The system is powered by technology from iTeam Resources Inc., which itself focuses on print management, public access computer management, cash card systems, campus and library cards, coin-operated vending machines, and consulting services for colleges, universities and public libraries.
