Alien Technology has unveiled an array of additional software features for its readers. The new software package, called Intelligent Tag Radar (ITR), enables the readers to determine the speed, direction and position of passive UHF RFID tags as they are identified, and to better pinpoint individual tags within a cluster or a read zone. The software package has four main components. ITR-Singulation enables readers to discern individual tags when there are multiple items in the read zone. Alien says the software can differentiate between tags separated by just a few inches. ITR-Velocity makes 30 calculations per second to determine the speed of a moving tag. ITR-Directionality determines the direction a tag is moving. Finally, ITR-Range calculates the relative distance between the tag and reader, which can help to determine the tag’s position and location. Projected applications for the new software package include airport luggage tracking systems, and retail settings in which the system could provide information about how long a customer interacted with a particular piece of tagged merchandise. The ITR software will be included in its ALR-9900, ALR-9800, and ALR-8800, and will be made available to current customers as a free firmware upgrade. Alien expects the upgrades will be available by June 30.
