Avery Dennison took second place, while Alien Technology placed third. Smartrac Technology Ltd and LS Industrial Systems (LSIS) rounded out the top five.
The Vendor Matrix is an analytical tool developed by ABI Research to provide a clear understanding of vendors'' positions in specific markets. Vendors are assessed on the important parameters of "innovation" and "implementation" across several criteria unique to each vendor matrix.
"Although facing increasing competition from its peers, UPM RFID leads with its emphasis on developing a broad, deep portfolio of passive UHF inlays that target multiple applications, industries, and tag form factors," says Michael Liard, research director, autoID and smart cards. "The diversity of the company''s offerings, markets, and customers/partners helped drive high scores across innovation and implementation criteria."
"Avery Dennison and Alien Technology, UPM RFID''s main rivals, also scored highly in the Vendor Matrix, making it a tight race at the top," says Liard. "Avery Dennison continues to demonstrate innovation and implementation success in the passive UHF inlay market, most notably in retail apparel tagging. Alien Technology, a leading passive UHF solution provider, captured high marks as well, reflecting the company''s strength in the passive UHF inlay side of their business."
Under "innovation," this particular matrix looked at product innovation/development, antenna and connection innovation and development, inlay manufacturing innovation, key roles in developing and expanding the market through industry and knowledge transfer, application strategy and standards-based product innovation, and a breadth of product offerings.
